God’s Admonitions
“My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.” Proverbs 6:1, 6.
Young children need to be admonished a lot. In fact, in a child’s eyes, that is probably all you are doing as a parent or another trusted adult. As a child, I remember many times my parents telling me not to do something or why I should not do something. Unfortunately, I did not always listen. It was not until I became an adult that I realized that my parents were right, and I became appreciative for their counsel realizing it was meant to keep me from harm’s way.
So, it is with the Lord, as your Heavenly Father, He gives you guidelines to keep you from trouble and gives you the right path to follow. Proverbs was given as an instruction book of right living, and in Proverbs 6, there are a few admonitions of which to be cautious.
First, you are warned against what would be today considered co-signing on a loan. The Bible has a lot of teaching on finances and how you should be responsible with the money God has given you. Taking on debt or more debt for someone else is not part of God’s plan in how to be a good steward of your money.
Second, the warning of being a lazy person coincides with how a financial situation may be. The life of an ant is being contrasted with someone who will not work and finds more pleasure in sleep and idleness. A person who will not work is a person who will fall into poverty and other dreadful situations. Look at the ant! If it can be diligent and persevere, so can you.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
There are several other admonitions this proverb gives. The way to stay out of trouble is to follow the advice of Proverbs.
