Warnings Against False Prophets
“Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,” Deuteronomy 13:3.
Many years ago, a very sweet family joined the church where my family and I were attending. They immediately became very involved in all the services and activities of the church. Each one brought special talents to the body, and they seemed to add new life and energy to our church family. But over time, false doctrine began to creep up within some of our young adult group. As the pastor investigated it further, it was discovered that private meetings were being held in this family’s home. Our young people were being drawn in and taught heresy from this man and his family. The church withdrew fellowship from them, but sadly, they took a few of our young members with them.
False teachers will not look or sound evil. They do not wave a big red flag indicating, “False teacher, beware!” On the contrary, they are often quite charismatic and knowledgeable of God’s Word. Paul warned the church at Corinth of this very thing. “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:13, 14).
The best defense against false doctrine is studying the Word of God daily. “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). We need to be approved unto God, not man. Following Christ with your whole heart and staying true to His Word will not be popular. Many would rather follow the false teachers that tickle the ears. Stand fast and stay true to Christ.
