The Details of the Transfiguration
“But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him,” Luke 9:32.
As I am writing this devotional, I am looking at a winter wonderland outside of my window. Over the course of the last few days, we received about ten inches of snow in central Arkansas. For those unfamiliar with our climate, ten inches is usually more snow that we see in a year or perhaps even two or three years. It is beautiful. It is white. It glistens when the sun reflects off the icy top layer. Especially for anyone that has never seen snow, it is a sight to behold.
I wonder what it was like for the three disciples to awaken from their sleep and see what they saw. Not only were they likely amazed at the sight of Moses and Elijah, but they were able to witness our Lord Jesus Christ in His glory. The Bible describes what Jesus looked like. “And as He prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering” (verse 29).
I think of the snow around me. I can try to explain to you what a snowy environment looks like. I can show you pictures, videos or describe the beauty in glowing terms, but frankly you cannot appreciate the remarkable beauty of a snow-white landscape until you see it with your own eyes. Likewise, I can try to picture the glory of the Lord and the events on the Mount of Transfiguration, but I cannot do it justice in my limited mind.
But thanks be to God, the time is coming where I will not have to imagine my Savior in glory. I look forward to the promise penned by John in his first letter. “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2).
ENCOURAGEMENT
What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see.
