The Significance of a Parable

“When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand,” Luke 21:30, 31.

In these verses, Jesus offered a parable using the fig tree as a symbol. Just as the budding of leaves signals the nearness of summer, so the unfolding of prophetic events signals the nearness of God’s kingdom. This illustration is not only timely but timeless, reminding us that spiritual awareness is just as necessary as physical observation.

Jesus was not just speaking about trees—He was speaking about signs. He wanted His disciples, and all believers after them, to live with discernment and readiness. The world gives off signs of the times: seasons of conflict, deception, shaking of nations and moral decline. But these are not meant to stir fear; they are meant to awaken faith.

The parable also highlights the importance of attentiveness. Those who are spiritually asleep might miss the signs altogether. But those who walk closely with Jesus, grounded in His Word, will recognize when the spiritual leaves begin to bud. The nearness of God’s kingdom is not just about the final return of Christ—it is about His nearness in every moment of our lives, calling us to walk in step with Him.  The parable calls us to watchfulness, obedience and a heart fixed on eternity.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY

God still speaks through simple signs for hearts willing to see. Stay alert, stay faithful, and trust that His kingdom is drawing near.
