The Pardon by Jesus

“And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchæus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house,” Luke 19:5.

In today’s key verses, we encounter the remarkable story of Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, despised by his community and known for his greed. Yet, in his heart stirred a curiosity—a longing to see Jesus. Being short in stature, Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore tree just to catch a glimpse of the Savior as He passed.

What a powerful moment! Jesus did not scold or shame Zacchaeus; He invited Himself into his life. Despite Zacchaeus’ reputation, Jesus saw beyond the surface into a heart ready for change. The crowd murmured, questioning why Jesus would associate with a sinner. But Jesus came to seek and to save the lost, not to please public opinion.

Zacchaeus responded with joy, repentance and generosity—promising to give half of his goods to the poor and repay anyone he had wronged fourfold. His outward transformation reflected the inward work of grace. Jesus declared, “This day is salvation come to this house” (verse 9), making it clear that no one is beyond His reach.

The pardon of Jesus is personal, powerful and purposeful. He does not wait for us to get our act together before reaching out. He meets us in our brokenness, calls us by name, and extends a grace that transforms. Zacchaeus did not earn pardon; he received it, and in receiving it, he changed.

The same Jesus who pardoned Zacchaeus stands ready to pardon us. His love crosses social lines, breaks through guilt and invites us into communion with Him. When we truly encounter Jesus, our lives cannot stay the same.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY

No heart is too hardened, and no past is too messy for Jesus’ pardon. His grace will meet you right where you are.
