Amos’ Third Sermon

“Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth, seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name,” Amos 5:7, 8.

“Seek the Lord, and ye shall live” (verse 6). This was the prevailing message of Amos’ third sermon to the house of Israel. It was a call to turn from their wickedness and wholly seek the Lord. King Solomon sought Almighty God with the congregation of Israel and offered a thousand burnt-offerings in worship. God was pleased and allowed Solomon to ask for whatever he desired. Solomon’s heart was so completely aligned with the will of God, he asked for wisdom to rightly judge the people (2 Chronicles 1:3-12).
This is a far cry from where Israel’s heart was in Amos’ day. Rather than seeking the living God and aligning themselves with His will, they sought after false gods that had no life. Unlike Solomon, the rulers were corrupt and did not execute righteous judgment among the people. The poor were oppressed, and those that sought the Lord were persecuted. Bribes were taken by dishonest rulers and there was no fear of Almighty God. Judgment was looming.
Yet God, in His great mercy, was calling His people to amend their ways. He is still calling His people to repentance today. Are you truly seeking the Lord and His purpose for your life? Consider His great power and wisdom. This is the One who spoke the world into existence and has all power in Heaven and earth. He knows what is best for you and desires to be Lord of your life. Seek Him with your whole heart and align your will with His today.

“Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6).
