The Revelation of God’s Judgment
“And he said, The Lord will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither,” Amos 1:2.
On August 24, AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted suddenly and buried the Roman city of Pompeii in a thick layer of volcanic ash. As a result, many people of that city died. However, had they known that it was going to happen and understood its danger, they might have left and been able to escape its deadly effects. The sad thing is, there were plenty of warning signs of its impending eruption. They had become so used to small tremors, areas of lifting soil, and contaminated water that they ignored all the warning signs.
Everybody would like to know of impending doom. Well, the good news is that the Lord has already told us of His judgment that is to come. Just as the Lord warned Israel’s neighbors (Amos 1:2), He has constantly warned Israel, their enemies, and the world of His impending judgment on them. The Lord has been consistent and constant in his warnings throughout the Word of God but this world will not listen. Be ready, or understand the danger even though the signs are all around us. I wonder if we will see the signs and warnings of when the Lord will come and execute judgment or be completely caught off guard like they were in Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius erupted. We should heed the warnings of Jesus when he said, “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man” (Luke 21:36).
JUST A THOUGHT
You may be thinking that when Jesus comes, it will be as a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2). We are also told, “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief” (1 Thessalonians 5:4).
