Words Can Wound

“He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit. There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: But the tongue of the wise is health. The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment,” Proverbs 12: 17-19

Our key verses provide a vivid portrayal of the power of words, warning us of their potential to wound or heal. This passage reminds us of the significance of our speech, urging us to use our words wisely.

Truthfulness—Speaking the truth is a fundamental aspect of righteous living. Truthfulness builds trust, fosters healthy relationships and reflects God’s character. In contrast, lies and deceit sow discord and harm. When we commit to honesty, we promote justice and integrity, shining the light in a world shrouded in darkness.

Tactfulness—Words carelessly spoken can cut deep, inflicting lasting emotional wounds. However, words chosen with care and wisdom can bring healing and comfort. Tactfulness involves considering the impact of our words before we speak, ensuring they uplift rather than harm. By being mindful of how we communicate, we can foster environments of support and encouragement.

Thoughtfulness—Thoughtfulness in speech involves knowing when to speak and when to remain silent. A wise person discerns the right time to share knowledge and the right time to withhold it. This discretion prevents unnecessary strife and preserves harmony. Conversely, a lack of thoughtfulness leads to the spread of foolishness, causing confusion and hurt.

Proverbs 12:17-23 teaches us that words have tremendous power. By committing to truthfulness, tactfulness and thoughtfulness, we can ensure our words bring life and healing rather than wounds and pain.
