From Jesus to Nathan the Son of David

“Which was the son of Melea, which was to son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,” Luke 3:31.

Genealogy is the study of families, family history and the tracing of their lineages. The genealogy products and services market size was valued at 4.66 billion dollars in 2024 and is projected to reach 10.10 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 11.19% during the forecast period 2024-2031.

Why are so many people studying their family tree? Most do so out of curiosity, hoping to learn more about who they are and from where they came. The research may reveal information that is impressive or perhaps even appalling! At any rate, people are curious about their roots.

The family tree of Jesus is especially significant when you understand the prophecy and promise connected with His birth. God made a promise to Abraham that his seed would bless all the nations of the earth (Genesis 12:2, 3). As you trace the genealogy provided in Luke 3:23-38, you find that God kept His word to Abraham, seeing Jesus is a direct descendent of his. Moreover, God designated the dynasty of King David to be eternally established with an unbroken chain of descendants to sit upon his throne. As we see in verse 31 of today’s reading, Nathan was David’s son, and Jesus descended from the line of Nathan.

What is your spiritual lineage? I am the child of a king, my family tree certifies my standing “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together,” Romans 8:17.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY

Ask the question, “Who is my family,” and you will answer the question, “who am I?”
