God’s Assurances

“Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck,” Proverbs 6:21.

There are several themes common to many training programs. Some jobs are tough, the entry requirements to be in a program are tough, and the demands placed on graduates are challenging. People who wish to succeed must possess discipline. Those who deviate from the path fall by the wayside. There are many examples, but the one that comes to my mind is the military, specifically entry-level training (Basic Training). The training is tough and repetitive, and by the time you finish, you eat, drink and breathe the military. Those who deviate from the program fall away quickly.

The Christian life is like that. It is tough and challenging, and many fall by the wayside. Some never even leave the wayside and get on the path. Oddly enough, those people will probably never see any strife or resistance since they have already done the enemy’s job by not engaging. However, it is true that those who get on the path of the Christian life will encounter things that could cause them to leave the path.

A common theme in most training programs is that students often repeat tasks until they are ingrained in the students’ minds. I remember writing drug cards in nursing school. Some we must have written dozens of times; those drugs are burned in my mind forever now.

This is what you must do with God’s Word. This proverb stated that we should to tie His Word around our neck. While stringing a Bible on a chain and wearing it would not accomplish much, the metaphor works; that is how close we should be to God’s Word. Yet, many never see their Bibles other than on Sunday; the only Scripture they see is what the preacher quotes in a sermon. How close are you to God’s Word?

JUST A THOUGHT

Keep enough of God’s Word in your mind, and there will not be room for sinful things to enter in it.
