Jesus and the Twelve Disciples

“Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,” Luke 9:46, 47.

If you have ever taken an education class or maybe even a psychology class, you have heard about learning modalities. Even if you have never heard that term, you probably know that people tend to learn best when they are taught in certain ways. One theory is that everyone fits into one of four categories: auditory, visual, kinesthetic or tactile learners. I bet some of you have said, “I’m more of a visual learner,” or “I love audiobooks because I remember it so much better by listening.” Jesus utilized these different modalities to teach His disciples. He preached to them, showed them His glory in the transfiguration, walked and fished with them and even sent them to heal people themselves, but we see here that they still had not learned what it meant to be like Him.

Selfishly, it feels nice to know that even the men who physically walked next to Jesus struggled with pride and ignorance. Since they just witnessed Jesus heal a boy with a demonic spirit, they probably thought nothing would ever happen to Him and maybe even that He really was going to take over as King of Israel. He had to remind them again that He would be delivered into the hands of men, but they still did not understand. Then they began arguing over who was the greatest among them after all the lessons on humility! Since the verbal and physical lessons were ineffectual, He brought in a visual. Setting a child in their midst, He demonstrated that one must receive and welcome those who had no status and nothing to offer in return. Not only that, one must become the least in order to be great.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY

Worship God today for His patience and long-suffering. He will never leave you, forsake you or give up on you.
