The Apostle’s Reason

“That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God,” 1 Corinthians 2:5.

Habits—you need to make them wisely: the kind you make early in life could make or break you later in life. I learned this the hard way. I was super skinny as a child and could eat almost anything I wanted in whatever quantity I wanted. I could go all day on chocolate and sweets. I remember sitting down one afternoon after a long day at school and eating an entire row of cookies out of the box. I cannot do this anymore. Now, with type-2 diabetes, I can only dream of single bites of cookies, let alone whole sleeves of them. Evidently, not all calories are the same.

What you allow in your mouth affects your body. What you allow in your heart and soul affects your spirit. Paul understood this, and he communicated this to the Corinthians when he told them that he had spoken to them in plain words rather than enticing words so “that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God,” (1 Corinthians 2:5). Paul believed that how they received the gospel and how they received the Word of God mattered. If their faith was built on anything but the Word and the Spirit, they were likely to fall away from serving God.

REFLECTION

Watch what you eat, physically and spiritually. There are long-term consequences with both.
