Tyre’s and Edom’s Judgment
“Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant. Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever,” Amos 1:9, 11.
A saying by old school parents is, “I have had it up to here with you” (as they point at their neck). When you heard those words you knew you were in trouble and that there was no way to escape. In Amos 1:9-12, the Lord informed the people of Tyrus and of Edom that He had had enough of their ungodly actions and disobedience and that He was about to bring judgment upon them. The Lord informs us that the basis for their punishment was because of their treatment of Israel which was a neighbor to Tyrus and Edom who were related to Israel through Esau.
You can cause the Lord to be angry when you do not treat your brothers and sisters right in the Lord’s churches. In the Lord’s churches God calls you the brethren, you are covenanted together as one body in Christ and and in your specific location considered a local church family. When you enslave brethren by holding them captive through unforgiveness and and have no compassion or pity for them, you are being disobedient to God and breaking the covenant agreed upon in your local church. Your desire towards your brethren in your church, your brothers and sister in Christ and your neighbors (all humanity) should be to invest in healing their hurts rather than inflicting pain on them.
FINAL THOUGHT
Compassion moves you closer to being like Christ.
